The client's garden had not been maintained for some time as building work had been happening. Allowing everything to become tired, overgrown and very dark in places. The garden was not very big or deep as the house had been extended.
The brief was to maximise the space of the garden for the family with young children, but to be adult friendly for entertaining. The area behind the garden all had mature trees so giving the feeling of stepping out from a wooded area, this feeling was utilised in the design.
The design gave maximum foot space so giving the garden a sense of space, and the curves in the sandstone which had fossilised fern leaves in them softened the angles of the garden. The house was a large period property so we introduced topiary near the house give a more formal feel amongst the planting.
We created the children's area with the wooded fairy tale of the crooked cottage playhouse, this was on artificial lawn so the children had a soft ground area to play on and it defined their area within the garden. The large bespoke curved brick seating with corner planting and the live willow arbour was woven and planted to create extra seating for guests and a more private feel.
Once the willow had matured lanterns could be hung from the arch giving a lovely feel to the garden in the evening. The planting was kept with a wooded area feel with flowering and structural interest all year round. The little bridge was the connection between the two areas and fun for the children.
Soft Lighting was also installed to extend the use of the garden in the evening this was achieved by up lighting structural plants and trees and the bridge. The Clients wanted something individual but to be practical and were very happy with the garden.
